GIVE KIDS A SMILE!!

True community collaboration at its best happened last Friday, February 21st, when the first annual "Give Kids a Smile" day was held. "Give Kids a Smile" day, a national dental access day sponsored by the American Dental Association, was created in order to educate and to bring to the forefront the need for good dental care for all children. The effort began with the outstanding coordinating efforts of Dr. Ron Ostroski and Dr. Alan Kiefer, two area dentists who worked hand-in-hand with InfoLink and the Viola Startzman Free Clinic, and area dentists so that some 50+ children could receive free dental examinations, consultations, and education. The following area dentists set aside time in their private offices to see children on this day:

Dr. Ron Ostroski
Dr. John Monheim
Dr. Barton Didrick
Dr. John Lyons
Dr. James Madigan
Dr. Thomas Boreman
The Kidron Dental Group
Dr. Theodore Feucht
Dr. Steve Miller
Dr. Chris Pesicek
Wooster Dental Associates
Dr. Steve Rhodes
Dr. Robert Salmans
Dr. William Earney
Dr. Mike Baus
Dr. Alexander DiFilippo
Dr. Krikor Ghazarian

In addition to those dentists who saw patients in their own offices, Dr. Mike Miller, Dr. Tony Biggio, Dr. Douglas Webb, Dr. Thomas Zacher, Dr. Mark Larj, and Dr. Alan Kiefer volunteered their time at the Viola Startzman Free Clinic to see some 45 children ages 3-10 throughout the day.

"Give Kids a Smile" day provided local children and their families, many of whom were visiting the dentist for the first time, a fun-filled, educational experience. The dentists did an outstanding job of removing the fear out from this first visit by teaching both the child and the parents about the value of good dental health.

Not only did these wonderful dentists volunteer their time, but we were also privileged to have the following professionals donate their time to assist the dentists:

Elaine Christian, LPN
Joyce Van Keuren, RN
Sherri Coy
Lois Fowler, RN
Linda Loutitt
Cheryl Flox
Nancy Higgs
Jan Reikowsky
Tammy Gradijan
Karen Pendolino
Anita Plumly
Lori Stacey

As Agencies, we see the daily struggles of area families who aren't able to pay for preventative dental care. Because area dentists and associated professionals shared their time and talents, nearly 100 children have had their dental health evaluated, and directed to the appropriate follow-up care. On behalf of these children and their families, please know that your generosity did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thanks for allowing us to help "Give Kids a Smile".
